Before the Event
The Brewing Challenge
Build an Alpha to Alliances deck for under €150 and send us the list. Old School does not have to be expensive.
The prize
The best brewer takes home this Zuran Orb, hand‑altered with MASTER BREWER across the art. One of one.
The rules
- The deck must be legal for FogCon: the fourteen sets above, the restricted list, no ante cards, no CE or IE.
- Deck and sideboard together must total under €150, priced by Moxfield at the moment you submit.
- Use standard printings. Summer Magic and anything Moxfield has no price data for shows as €0 and does not count as free. Screenshot your total if you are close to the line.
- Submit as many decks as you like.
- Entry does not require attending FogCon.
- Judging and prizes at the event.
How decks are judged
Each deck is scored on three axes, and your strongest one is weighted highest. A deck does not need to compete on all three.
Competitive
How well it would do across five rounds of Swiss.
Innovative
An unseen brew. A line, an engine or a card nobody plays.
Spicy
A strong theme. Iconic cards. A deck with a story.
Example deck
A mono‑red list built to the brief: view it on Moxfield. Every entry is published after the deadline, so you can play your own deck at FogCon or borrow someone else’s.

Good luck. Entries close 1 September and every deck gets published afterwards.

Before You Ask
Questions
- I’ve never played Old School. Can I come?
- Yes. Say hello in the WhatsApp group and we’ll help you put a deck together.
- Are proxies allowed?
- No. Every card must be a real printing whose art and frame both match a legal set.
- What's your reprint policy?
- A non-proxy, non-foil card is legal if both its art and its frame match a printing from one of the legal sets, Alpha to Alliances. Gold border cards are not legal. So Revised, 4th Edition, Foreign Black Border and Summer Magic are all fine, as are Revised Plateau and Revised Serendib Efreet. A modern-frame reprint is not legal even when it carries the original art.
- Can I play Collectors’ Edition or International Edition cards?
- No. CE/IE cards were printed with squared corners, gold-tinted/distinct backs, and explicit labels as collector's display items, making them ineligible for standard and sanctioned tournaments.
- Is there a cut to top 8?
- No. Five rounds of Swiss decides the standings and everyone plays all five.
- What are the prizes?
- Hand‑altered cards, one of a kind. Trophies for the top four, an orb for the Brewing Challenge winner, and awards for Best Unpowered and Best Spice. Everyone who turns up gets a FogCon‑stamped Fog to use as a duelist’s ledger. See them all.
- Do I need a decklist?
- No. But if you want to participate in the Brewing Challenge, you must submit your decklist by 1 September.
- Is the venue accessible?
- Ask in the WhatsApp group and we’ll confirm the current access arrangements with the venue. TBC
- Can I turn up on the day?
- Only if a seat is free. With twenty places, it usually won’t be.
- Do I have to enter the brewing challenge?
- No, it’s optional. All entries are published after 1 September. See the rules.
- Do I have to attend to enter the brewing challenge?
- Not at all — more entries are welcome. However, judging and prizes will be awarded at the event.
